Luxor vs Cappadocia: Which Hot Air Balloon Ride Is Better?

· 2 min read

Luxor and Cappadocia are the two most famous balloon destinations in the world, and travellers often ask which one to choose. We are a Luxor operator, so we are biased — but both are extraordinary, and the right answer depends on what you want to see. Here is a fair comparison.

The short answer

  • Choose Cappadocia for surreal rock landscapes and the spectacle of a very large number of balloons in the sky at once.
  • Choose Luxor for 3,500-year-old temples and tombs beneath you, the Nile, more reliable flying weather, and usually a lower price.
  • If you are already in Egypt, Luxor is the obvious choice. If you are already in Turkey, Cappadocia is.

The view

Cappadocia’s landscape is otherworldly, and photographs of hundreds of balloons over the fairy chimneys are famous for good reason. Luxor’s view is different: it is a living map of ancient Thebes. You float over the Theban hills that hide the royal tombs, past the terraces of Hatshepsut’s temple and the Colossi of Memnon, with the green Nile valley ending sharply at the desert. Read exactly what you see.

Weather and reliability

Both destinations fly only in calm morning air, and both cancel on windy days. Cappadocia’s winters bring snow and freezing fog, which ground flights more often. Luxor’s climate is dry and stable for most of the year. Our best time to fly guide goes month by month.

Price

Luxor flights are generally more affordable than Cappadocia’s, for a comparable flight length. Prices vary with basket size and take-off slot in both places. Our Luxor price guide explains what a fair price looks like.

Crowds

Both destinations have busy mornings in high season. If you dislike crowded baskets, the solution is the same in both: book a smaller or private basket.

Safety

Both are regulated by national civil aviation authorities. In Luxor that is the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority, which tightened rules after the 2013 accident. Read what happened and what changed.

Can I do both?

Plenty of travellers do — and say they are not the same experience twice. One is about landscape, the other about history.
