1. Find out who actually flies you

Only licensed operators fly balloons in Luxor. Many websites selling “Luxor balloon tours” are agents. That is not a problem in itself, but you should know the operator’s name before you pay, so you can check its reviews and licence. Ask: “Which company operates my flight?”

2. Check the licence and insurance

Commercial ballooning is regulated by the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority. A legitimate operator will answer questions about its licence and passenger insurance immediately. Read how the system works.

3. Ask how many people are in the basket

This changes the experience more than anything else. Large baskets are divided into compartments; small and private baskets give you space at the rail. Two flights with the same name can carry very different numbers of people. Our guide to private vs shared flights explains the options.

4. Ask about the take-off slot

The first wave lifts off before sunrise; later waves take off with the sun already up. If the sunrise itself is the point, make sure you are on the first slot.

5. Read the cancellation policy before paying

The correct answer to “what happens if the weather cancels?” is a free reschedule or a full refund, your choice. Credit notes, vouchers or partial refunds are warning signs. Our own rules are on the cancellation and weather policy page, and explained in what happens when a flight is cancelled.

6. Read reviews the smart way

  • Read the three-star reviews. They tell you how a company behaves when things go wrong.
  • Look for recent reviews that mention the pilot by name.
  • Check independent platforms such as Google and TripAdvisor, not only the company’s own website.
  • Be wary of identical, unsourced testimonials.

Our guest reviews page links to independent platforms.

7. Compare the real price

A price that looks cheap may exclude hotel pickup, add a “West Bank fee”, or put you in the largest basket on the last slot. Compare what is included: pickup, boat or bridge transfer, refreshments, certificate, basket size, flight length. Our price guide explains what a fair price looks like.

8. Meet the pilots

A good operator is proud of its pilots. You can meet ours on the crew page.
