Balloons inflating on the launch field

What Happens on a Luxor Balloon Morning, Minute by Minute

· 3 min read

Most people book a Luxor balloon ride without knowing what the morning actually involves. It is longer than the flight, it starts in the dark, and almost everyone says the hour before take-off was half the magic. Here is the whole morning, step by step, with the timings we use on a typical spring day.

In summer everything moves about 30 minutes earlier; in winter about 45 minutes later. We confirm your exact pickup time by WhatsApp the evening before. Full seasonal times are on our flight information page.

1. Pickup in the dark

Be in your hotel lobby ten minutes early. The driver has several pickups and a fixed slot at the launch field. Pickup is included from anywhere in Luxor, including Nile cruise ships. Wear layers and closed shoes — our what to wear guide covers each season.

2. Arrival at the launch field

The launch fields sit in farmland on the West Bank, a short drive from the Valley of the Kings. You arrive to the sound of fans and the first bursts of burner flame lighting up the envelopes. Tea, coffee and a light bite are served while the crew works.

3. Inflation and briefing

First a cold-air fan fills the envelope, then the pilot fires the burners and the balloon stands up. This is the best moment for photos on the ground. Your pilot then briefs the basket: where to stand, what to hold, how to adopt the landing position. Listen — it is short and it matters. Read how balloon safety works in Luxor.

4. Take-off

You climb in over the side using foot-holds. Take-off is so gentle that most people only notice it when they see the ground crew getting smaller. There is no jolt and no sense of height the way a tall building gives you.

5. The flight

Balloons drift with the wind, usually northwards over the necropolis, at anywhere from 300 to 2,000 feet. The pilot changes height to find different wind directions. You will see the sun rise over the Eastern Desert, then the light sweep across the Theban hills, Hatshepsut’s temple, the Colossi of Memnon, villages, sugar-cane fields and the Nile. It is quiet between burns — you can hear dogs barking and roosters below.

6. Landing

The chase crew follows by road and meets the balloon in an open field. When the pilot calls it, adopt the landing position: knees bent, back to the direction of travel, holding the rope handles. Most landings are a gentle bump; occasionally the basket tips and slides a few metres. Local children often run out to watch.

7. Certificate and back to the hotel

The crew packs away the envelope — you can help if you like — and you receive your flight certificate. You are back at your hotel in time for breakfast, or straight onto a West Bank tour if you booked one such as Balloon + Valley of the Kings.
