Balloons fly over Luxor every day of the year, weather permitting. But the experience in January and the experience in July are different mornings, and the honest answer to “when should I come” depends on what you are optimising for.
The short answer
October to April is the comfortable season: mild mornings, high proportion of flyable days, and the light most photographers want. May to September is hotter and the take-off is earlier, but flights are quieter, cheaper to combine with the rest of Egypt, and the air is often exceptionally still.
Month by month
| Months | Dawn temperature | Take-off | What it is like |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nov – Feb | 8–14°C | ≈ 06:30 | Peak season. Cold before sunrise, perfect afterwards. Busiest skies — 20+ balloons up at once, which is a spectacle in itself. Book ahead. |
| Mar – Apr | 14–20°C | ≈ 05:45 | Arguably the best compromise. Warm enough to be pleasant, stable air, long clear mornings. The khamsin wind can occasionally cancel days in April. |
| May – Jun | 20–26°C | ≈ 05:15 | Hot by 09:00 but the flight itself is over before the heat arrives. Fewer balloons, quieter fields. |
| Jul – Aug | 24–28°C | ≈ 05:15 | Low season. Very still air, very early start, and you are back at the hotel pool before the day gets serious. Best value. |
| Sep – Oct | 18–24°C | ≈ 05:45 | The season turning. October in particular is excellent and not yet fully booked. |
How often do flights actually get cancelled?
Across the year, most mornings in Luxor are flyable — this is one of the most reliable ballooning climates in the world, which is exactly why the industry grew here. The two things that stop us are ground wind above the operating limit and poor visibility.
- Winter occasionally brings morning mist off the Nile that clears too late for the window.
- Late March to early May can bring the khamsin, a hot dusty wind out of the desert. When it blows, nobody flies.
- Midsummer is the most consistently flyable period of the year.
The practical implication: put your balloon flight on your first full morning in Luxor, not your last. That gives you a spare morning to be moved to if the weather stands you down.
Which season suits you
- Photographers: November to February. Low sun angle, long shadows across the necropolis, and the most balloons in frame.
- Families: March, April or October. Children handle a 20°C dawn far better than an 8°C one.
- Value: July and August. Fewer people, easier availability.
- Combining with a Nile cruise: October to April, when cruise schedules are densest — book the balloon as soon as your itinerary is fixed, because whole ships book at once.
Whatever the season, pack a jacket
This is the single most common mistake. Luxor is a desert climate: the temperature range between dawn and mid-afternoon can be 20°C. People pack for the afternoon they read about and stand shivering at the launch field at 04:45 in August. Long trousers, closed shoes, and a layer you can take off.
