Balloon silhouetted against the Luxor sunrise

Is There a Sunset Hot Air Balloon Ride in Luxor?

· 2 min read

It is a fair question: Luxor sunsets over the Theban hills are spectacular, so why do all the balloons fly at dawn? The short answer is that commercial balloon flights in Luxor operate at sunrise only. Here is why, and how to get the best of both.

Why balloons fly only at sunrise

  • Calm air. Overnight the ground cools and the air settles. Once the sun heats the desert, rising warm air creates gusts and turbulence that make flying and landing unsafe. By late afternoon those conditions are still present.
  • More lift. Cool morning air gives a hot air balloon more lift, so it can carry passengers safely with a good margin.
  • Predictable winds. Pilots can forecast the morning winds over the West Bank reliably, which matters for choosing landing fields.
  • Regulation. Take-off windows in Luxor are set centrally under the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority, and they are in the morning.

Sunrise vs sunset light

The sunrise flight has its own advantages. The sun rises over the Eastern Desert and the Nile, then lights up the Theban hills and the temples on the West Bank — exactly the side you are flying over. At sunset the light falls behind those hills, so the monuments would be in shadow.

How to enjoy a Luxor sunset

  • A felucca on the Nile. Sail as the sun drops behind the West Bank hills. Our Balloon + Sunset Felucca combines the sunrise flight and a sunset sail in one day, with a rest in between.
  • Luxor Temple at dusk. Arrive before sunset and stay as the lights come on. See our Karnak and Luxor Temple guide.
  • A West Bank rooftop. Many guesthouses have roof terraces facing the hills.
