Proposing in a Hot Air Balloon in Luxor: How to Plan It

· 2 min read

A sunrise over ancient Thebes, the Nile below, and nobody else in the basket: Luxor is one of the most romantic places in the world to propose. It also needs more planning than a dinner reservation, because you are asking at 1,500 feet, before breakfast, in the dark. Here is how to make it go smoothly.

Book a private basket

This is the single most important decision. In a shared basket you will be asking in front of strangers in your compartment, and the moment can be rushed. A private luxury flight gives you the basket to yourselves with just the pilot. Our comparison of private vs shared flights explains the difference.

Tell us in advance — secretly

Message us on WhatsApp when you book and say it is a proposal. We will:

  • Brief the pilot so they can choose a calm moment and keep the balloon steady
  • Keep every message to you, never to your partner
  • Suggest the earliest available morning so you have a backup if wind cancels
  • Arrange a photographer on request

When to ask

Most couples choose one of three moments:

  1. As the sun breaks the horizon. The classic moment, about ten minutes after take-off on a sunrise flight.
  2. Over the temples. When the pilot is close to the Theban hills and Hatshepsut’s temple comes into view.
  3. After landing. Calmer, with the crew and photographer ready, and no risk of dropping anything.

The ring

Keep it in a zipped inner pocket, not in a box in your hand. There is nothing below you to catch it. Open the box low inside the basket, not over the edge.

Photos and video

A phone on a wrist strap works well for video. For professional photos, our balloon ride and photo session adds a photographer on the launch field and traditional Egyptian costumes. Read our balloon photography tips too.

What if the weather cancels?

That is why you book the first possible morning of your stay. If the pilot stands down for wind, you move to the next morning at no cost or take a full refund. Have a backup plan for the moment — a felucca at sunset works beautifully. Our balloon and sunset felucca combines both.

Honeymoons and anniversaries

Everything above applies. Tell us the occasion and we will do what we can to make the morning feel special. Couples also love the Premium Experience for its smaller basket and unhurried service.

Frequently asked questions

Can I propose in a shared balloon?

Yes, but a private basket makes the moment yours. In a shared flight the pilot will still help if you tell them in advance.

Can you bring champagne?

Alcohol is not served in the basket. Celebrate on landing or at dinner.

How far in advance should I book?

Private baskets are limited, so book as early as you can, especially from October to April.
