Is There a Hot Air Balloon Over the Pyramids? Giza vs Luxor Explained

· 3 min read

It is one of the most-searched questions about ballooning in Egypt: can you take a hot air balloon over the Pyramids of Giza? The short answer is that free-flying sunrise balloons — the kind you see in photos of Egypt — operate over Luxor, not Cairo. But in 2026 something new is arriving at Giza, and it is worth understanding what it is and what it is not.

The short answer

  • Luxor: commercial free-flight hot air balloons fly every suitable morning over the West Bank — the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s temple, the Colossi of Memnon and the Nile. Flights last around 45 minutes and drift with the wind.
  • Giza: there are no regular free-flight balloon tours over the Pyramids. In late August 2026 Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities inspected a new tethered balloon attraction near the plateau, which was preparing for trial operations.

What is the Giza tethered balloon?

According to Egypt’s state news agency, the Giza balloon is designed to rise vertically to about 150 metres while remaining attached to the ground, for an experience of roughly 15 minutes. It sits in desert outside the immediate archaeological zone, about two kilometres from the Pyramids, with multilingual commentary for visitors. Check the latest status before you travel, as opening dates for trial-phase attractions can move.

Why are the “real” balloons in Luxor?

Luxor has the conditions balloonists dream about: calm, cool mornings for most of the year, wide open farmland on the West Bank to land in, and one of the densest collections of ancient monuments on earth directly below. Commercial ballooning has operated there since the late 1980s, and it is regulated by the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority — read more in our safety guide.

Can I do the Pyramids and a Luxor balloon on one trip?

Yes, and it is easier than people expect. Cairo to Luxor is about an hour by domestic flight, or an overnight sleeper train. Our Balloon + Giza Pyramids & GEM 2-day tour combines a sunrise flight over Luxor’s necropolis with the Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum. For a full week, the 7-day Egypt Discovery adds a Nile cruise and Abu Simbel.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a hot air balloon in Cairo?

Not a free-flight one. The Giza tethered balloon is the first balloon attraction built for the Pyramids area; it goes up and down rather than flying across the city.

Which is better, Luxor or Cappadocia?

Cappadocia has more balloons and dramatic rock formations; Luxor has 3,500-year-old temples and the Nile beneath you, usually at a lower price. If you are already in Egypt, Luxor is the one to do.

Can I see the Pyramids from a Luxor balloon?

No — Giza is around 500 km north. From the Luxor balloon you see the Theban monuments, which many travellers find even more impressive from the air. Here is exactly what you see.
