Hot Air Balloon in Luxor With Kids: A Practical Guide for Families

· 3 min read

Yes, children can fly — and for many families the balloon becomes the moment of the whole Egypt trip that the kids still talk about years later. But a sunrise flight with children needs a little more planning than one for adults: the pickup is early, the basket is tall, and a tired child at 1,500 feet is nobody’s idea of fun. Here is how to get it right.

What age can children fly?

From 6 years old. The reason is physical rather than bureaucratic: the basket wall is about 1.2 m high, and a smaller child spends the flight looking at wicker. Children from about 8 upwards usually get the most out of it — they can see over the edge comfortably and they remember it. Every child flies in the same basket as a parent or guardian. Full rules are in our requirements guide.

Is it safe for children?

A balloon ride is one of the gentlest forms of flight there is. There is no take-off roll, no turbulence of the kind you feel in an aeroplane, and no sensation of height in the way a ladder or a tall building gives you, because there is no fixed point connecting you to the ground. The part to prepare children for is the landing. It can be a firm bump, and the basket occasionally tips and slides. Practise the landing position at the hotel the night before — knees bent, holding the rope handle, back to the direction of travel — and turn it into a game. Children who know what is coming treat the landing as the best bit.

Surviving the 4 a.m. start

  • Book your first morning in Luxor. If wind cancels the flight, you have another morning to try. (More on this in our best time to fly guide.)
  • Lay out clothes the night before. Children can travel half-asleep in the vehicle and on the boat.
  • Bring a snack and a small water bottle. Hungry children get cold faster.
  • Plan the rest of the day around a nap. You are back at the hotel by mid-morning. A pool afternoon after a 4 a.m. start is not lazy parenting; it is strategy.

Keeping them warm

Winter dawns in Luxor (December to February) can be close to 5–8 °C on the ground. It warms quickly once the sun is up and the burner gives off radiant heat, but children feel the first half hour most. A fleece, a hat and long trousers make the difference. In summer, a light layer is enough. See our what to wear guide for month-by-month advice.

Turning the flight into a story

The West Bank is a treasure map from above. Before the flight, show your children a picture of Hatshepsut’s temple and the Colossi of Memnon and make it a game to spot them. Our article on what you see from a balloon over the Valley of the Kings gives the order in which landmarks usually appear. The pilot will point things out too — children are welcome to ask questions.

Private basket or shared?

With younger children, a private or small-basket flight is worth considering: you have the compartment to yourselves, nobody minds an excited commentary, and the pilot can tailor the briefing. For older children and teenagers the standard sunrise flight is perfectly fine. We compare the two in private vs shared flights.

Child prices

Where a child fare applies, it is shown on the flight page and confirmed on your booking. Our Luxor balloon price guide explains what drives prices across the market.

Families with children under 6

If you have a mix of ages, one parent can fly with the older children while the other stays with the little one — or everyone can join the sunrise photo session, which takes place in and around a real balloon basket on the ground, with no flight.

Frequently asked questions

Can a baby or toddler fly in a hot air balloon?

No. The minimum age is 6.

Do children get scared?

Rarely in the air — the movement is slow and silent apart from the burner. The burner’s roar can startle very young children at first; tell them to expect it.

Is there a toilet?

Not on the balloon. Use the facilities at the hotel or on the boat before the launch; the flight itself is about 45 minutes.
