Luxor Hot Air Balloon From Hurghada: How the Trip Actually Works

· 3 min read

Every winter thousands of Red Sea holidaymakers decide they cannot go home without seeing Luxor — and the balloon is high on the list. It is entirely possible from Hurghada, El Gouna, Makadi, Soma Bay or Marsa Alam. The question is not whether, but how, because a sunrise flight and a four-hour drive do not fit neatly into one day.

How far is Luxor from Hurghada?

About 290 km by road — roughly four hours each way via Safaga and Qena, depending on stops and the time of day. From Marsa Alam it is a longer drive, typically four and a half to five hours. From El Gouna, add around 30 minutes to the Hurghada figures.

The problem with a same-day balloon trip

Balloons in Luxor lift off around sunrise — anywhere from about 05:00 in June to about 06:30 in January. To be at the launch site in time, a same-day trip from Hurghada has to leave the hotel at around midnight to 01:00. You then fly, tour the temples all day in the heat, and drive four hours back, arriving late in the evening. People do it. Most of them say afterwards they were too tired to enjoy the Valley of the Kings.

There is a second problem: weather. Luxor flights are occasionally cancelled for wind. On a day trip there is no tomorrow morning to try again — you get a refund, but you have driven eight hours and missed the flight.

Why the overnight trip is better

Our Hurghada to Luxor overnight tour solves both problems:

  1. Day 1: private transfer from your Red Sea resort to Luxor, check in and sleep in a Luxor hotel — twenty minutes from the launch fields instead of four hours.
  2. Day 2: an early-morning pickup, the Nile crossing in the dark and the sunrise flight over the West Bank. Then breakfast, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s temple and the Colossi of Memnon, lunch across the river, Karnak and Luxor Temple — and the private transfer back to your resort.

You sleep in a bed instead of a minibus, you see both banks of the river, and if the balloon cannot fly on day 2 there is often time to rearrange the day sensibly.

Is the day trip ever the right choice?

If your holiday is short and you cannot spare a night, a day trip is better than not going at all. Make it work by booking the earliest possible return day of your holiday (so a cancellation does not ruin anything else), sleeping in the afternoon beforehand, and choosing a tour with a short ground programme. Message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly which option suits your dates.

What about Marsa Alam?

From Marsa Alam the same-day option becomes very hard — departure would be well before midnight. We strongly recommend the overnight version. The extra cost of one hotel night is small compared with the drive you are already making.

What about flying from Hurghada to Luxor?

There are no regular direct flights between Hurghada and Luxor airports, so road transfer is the standard route. Private air-conditioned vehicles are the norm; the road is long and straight, through desert and then the Nile Valley.

Combining the balloon with a Nile cruise

If you have four days or more, consider a Luxor + Nile cruise + balloon package and return to the Red Sea afterwards. It is the most relaxed way to see Upper Egypt and still fly at sunrise.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see the balloons from Hurghada?

No — balloons only fly over Luxor’s West Bank. There are no commercial free-flight balloon operations on the Red Sea coast.

Is hotel pickup included from the Red Sea resorts?

Yes — our Hurghada package includes a private transfer from your Red Sea resort and back. For hotels further south, such as Marsa Alam, message us before booking and we will confirm the arrangements.

What is the best season to do this?

October to April. Summer flights are beautiful, but a long drive plus a full day of touring in 40 °C heat is hard going. Our best time to fly guide breaks it down month by month.
